Keeping Her Close -A Pacific Cove Romance by Carol Ross

BOOK SUMMARY:

Hired to protect her

…unable to resist her

The job sounds simple: teach a businessman’s daughter how to stay safe. But former navy SEAL turned bodyguard Kyle Frasier has a personal motive, too. Harper Jansen is his late best friend’s fiancée. Loyalty demands he protect her, not that Harper looks in need of rescuing. In fact, it’s Kyle who needs help—balancing duty with his desire to build a life with the one woman he shouldn’t want…

My thoughts:

Harper Jensen is funny, sweet and the daughter of a billionaire who happens be in need of a bodyguard.  The bodyguard chosen for the job just happened to be the best friend of her deceased fiancee.  I normally shy away from books about billionaires because, the few that I have read haven't been too interesting to me, but this one held my attention throughout.

Harper isn't the typical spoiled little rich girl that I expected to see, she is an independent young woman who focuses on her photography and she not at all self absorbed.  She's kind of a free spirit, she has odd hours due to her photography, the complete opposite of Kyle Frasier.  He's much more regimented and has to adhere to Harper's unusual schedule because that's part of his job after all.  Kyle is charming and takes his job seriously but keeping Harper safe is quite a challenge for him at times which made this such a fun and really interesting read.

Ms. Ross actually did the impossible by making me genuinely like a billionaire daughter and her father when she crafted the Harper family. Kyle and his family were easy to love, too and I am so glad that I decided to read this fast paced and cleverly written book.

My thanks to the author and Prism Book Tours for the complimentary copy of Keeping Her Close.

#AOTRPrism Review and Giveaway of The Art of Rivers by Janet W. Ferguson

The Art of Rivers
(Coastal Hearts #3)
By Janet W. Ferguson
Christian Contemporary Romance
Paperback & ebook, 299 Pages

June 30th 2019 by Southern Sun Press LLC

Rivers Sullivan bears both visible and invisible scars—those on her shoulder from a bullet wound and those on her heart from the loss of her fiancé during the same brutal attack. Not even her background as an art therapist can help her regain her faith in humanity. Still, she scrapes together the courage to travel to St. Simons Island to see the beach cottage and art gallery she’s inherited from her fiancé. When she stumbles upon recovering addicts running her gallery, she’s forced to reckon with her own healing.

After the tragic drowning of his cousin, James Cooper Knight spends his days trying to make up for his past mistakes. He not only dedicates his life to addiction counseling, but guilt drives him to the water, searching for others who’ve been caught unaware of the quickly rising tides of St. Simons. When he rescues a peculiar blond woman and her sketch pad from a sandbar, then delivers this same woman to his deceased grandmother’s properties, he knows things are about to get even more complicated.

Tragic circumstances draw Cooper and Rivers closer, but they fight their growing feelings. Though Cooper’s been sober for years, Rivers can’t imagine trusting her heart to someone in recovery, and he knows a relationship with her will only rip his family further apart. Distrust and guilt are only the first roadblocks they must overcome if they take a chance on love.

Also available through KindleUnlimited

My thoughts:

There were two reasons I was drawn to this book, the first is the author and the second is this beautiful cover.  I love Janet Ferguson's writing and loved the first book in the series, Magnolia Storms so I was excited to read this one.

What I liked so much in this novel is the way Ms. Ferguson tackles a heavy topic and she doesn't sugarcoat it at all.  In fact she's very clear on the subject of addiction,, the effects it has on the person addicted and those in their lives.  The character of Rivers Sullivan is unwittingly thrust in the middle of recovering addicts when she travels to St. Simons Island to see the beach cottage and art gallery she has inherited from her fiancé.  I was just as shocked as Rivers was to find her gallery being run by the recovering addicts but loved the premise of the storyline.  I loved Cooper, a young man who has been sober for several years, has a heart for others and their struggles while truly caring for those who are still struggling.

There are secondary characters who I cared for almost as much as I cared for Rivers and Cooper.  They all seemed so real to me and I wanted nothing but the best for each and everyone of them because I can't imagine the difficulties they faced. I loved the message of faith and hope woven throughout, the slow buildup of relationships and I loved the setting of St. Simons Island.   The Art of Rivers is one of those books that will stay on my mind for quite awhile and I imagine the other books in the series will be the same which is why I'll be reading them as soon as possible.

My thanks to Prism Book Tours and the author for the complimentary copy provided.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Website     Facebook      Twitter     Goodreads

Book Summary:

In 1946, a returning World War II veteran is determined to reclaim his place among professional baseball's upper echelon and win back the woman he once fell for. Two months into the new season, at the top of his game, he abandons his team, casting aside his fame and riches and vanishing forever from the public eye. What drives a man to walk away from everything he cherishes, never to be heard from again?

The Batter's Boxfollows the path of Will Jamison, a star player with the Washington Senators who enlists in the U.S. Army following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. When the war ends, Jamison returns to Washington, a decorated hero tormented by deep emotional scars. Burdened with a crushing guilt and harrowing memories he cannot escape, Jamison's life is consumed by an explosive temper, sleepless nights, and a gradual descent into alcoholism. Will he continue, alone with his anguish and misery? Or will he level with those around him, including the woman he loves, and seek the professional care he desperately needs, even at the risk of exposing his most closely guarded secrets?

Praise:

"We remember World War II as 'the Good War, ' when right and wrong seemed so clear. We won, they lost, and our guys came home as heroes. But as gifted author Andy Kutler tells us in THE BATTER'S BOX, mortal combat is anything but good, heroism comes with a horrific price, and some of the most tragic wounds don't bleed -- and don't go away. If you want to know what really happened at Bastogne in the terrible winter of 1944, read this powerful, haunting book." -- Daniel P. Bolger, Lieutenant General, U.S. Army (Ret.), author of Our Year of War: Two Brothers, Vietnam, and a Nation Divided

"Andy Kutler has the eyes and ears of combat soldiers and the heart of those who love them. The horror, courage, and camaraderie of battle rivals the grit of Once an Eagle, while the poignant authenticity of Will Jamison's struggles with his hidden wounds highlight that, for many, the impact of war lingers far past the last shots of battle. THE BATTER'S BOX is a superb work of historical fiction that carries important lessons for today." -- William E. Rapp, Major General, U.S. Army (Ret.), Former Commandant, U.S. Army War College, and Commandant of Cadets, U.S. Military Academy

“The Batter's Box is a riveting read. It is a love story and a war story and a novel with far more truth than fiction. I’m a psychiatrist specializing in treating men and women with post-traumatic stress disorder. If you love someone with that invisible wound, read this book. If you are curious and concerned about the condition, read this book. Most survivors of profound trauma lack a language to convey their life stories because those stories include the unspeakable. When the hero of this compelling novel speaks, we listen, we learn and we are transformed. If you are currently struggling with the impact of major trauma, reading passages here may be disturbing and ‘triggering.’ But I believe it is worth the risk because this book affirms your reality and your dignity.” --Frank M. Ochberg, MD, Former Associate Director, National Institute of Mental Health

"Historical fiction, if it reflects careful scholarship, is a powerful tool in the hands of a gifted writer, and can deepen our understanding of real events and people. Andy Kutler's THE BATTER’S BOX offers an impressive addition to World War II literature, bringing fresh attention to the adjustment struggle faced by so many returning war veterans. Kutler's depiction of one of the more heroic small-unit engagements in US Army history is both compelling and long overdue." -- Gordon H. "Nick" Mueller, President & CEO Emeritus, The National WWII Museum

My thoughts:

I'm not normally a fan of baseball relate novels but when I saw this was about the Washington Senators and my husband and I have been watching the Washington Nationals , I decided it would be an interesting read.  Plus, it's a time slip novel which I am a huge fan of and I love this genre.  So, win-win, right?

I have to say that I loved this book much more than I thought I would. The author seamlessly transitions between time periods in such a way that I never felt like I was missing any part of the story. I loved the beginning of the book where we meet Kay in 2005 and how the story is told through her and her interview with an investigative journalist.  I loved that we got to know the story of Will Jameson a star player with the Senators who enlisted in the Army following the attack on Pearl Harbor. What a story it is, too.  Plagued by PTSD, Will is one of those characters who will really make you think how difficult it is for any returning soldier but one returning in that time period was so sad because back then, they really didn't seem to know about treating something like that.

Will and countless other were left with horrific emotional scars that left them with unbearable darkness to overcome.  The author tell this heartbreaking story so well that I kept reading late into the night.  I found this well paced and extremely interesting novel hard to put down which is why I recommend it to other readers.
My thanks to the author and HFVBT for the complimentary copy of this book.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Stitches in Time (The Deacon's Family #2) by Suzanne Woods Fisher

Book Description

Detachment had worked well as a life strategy for horse trainer Sam Schrock. Until he met Mollie Graber . . .

New to Stoney Ridge, schoolteacher Mollie has come to town for a fresh start. Aware of how fleeting and fragile life is, she wants to live it boldly and bravely. When Luke Schrock, new to his role as deacon, asks the church to take in foster girls from a group home, she's the first to raise her hand. The power of love, she believes, can pick up the dropped stitches in a child's heart and knit them back together.

Mollie envisions sleepovers and pillow fights. What the 11-year-old twins bring to her home is anything but. Visits from the sheriff at midnight. Phone calls from the school truancy officer. And then the most humiliating moment of all: the girls accuse Mollie of drug addiction.
There's only one thing that breaks through the girls' hard shell--an interest in horses. Reluctantly and skeptically, Sam Schrock gets drawn into Mollie's chaotic life. What he didn't expect was for love to knit together the dropped stitches in his own heart . . . just in time.

Suzanne Woods Fisher invites you back to the little Amish church of Stoney Ridge for a touching story of the power of love.

My thoughts:

It was such a pleasure to revisit Stoney Ridge, a wonderful community that I discovered in 2015 and one I have loved ever since that first visit..  It's always a little different with characters who aren't always perfect, but that's how life is, right?

Speaking of imperfect characters, the author brings us up to date with what's been happening in the community.  So, Luke Schrock has drawn the lot to be the new deacon, a disbelief felt not only to him but shared by many others within the community.  He's a good man but he made some really bad decisions in the past and if you've read the first book in the series, Mending Fences, you'll know what I mean.  Luke and Izzy are newly married, Fern is back and still grieving the loss of her husband, Amos and we meet some new characters who definitely kept me turning pages as fast as I could to find out what shenanigans they would be into next.

Molly Graber is the new schoolteacher and is so excited when an opportunity comes along for her to take in foster children that she's blindsided by the girls she fosters, who are not even remotely like what she had imagined. Through the chaos of finding and keeping homes for the children each of the foster families will learn something about themselves and open their hearts more than they thought possible.  I  appreciated the author not sugarcoating that life would be easier for the kids in their new homes and it takes a lot to gain the trust of all involved in the process.

I thoroughly enjoyed this engaging. well written and perfectly paced novel.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher.  All opinions are completely my own.

Hope's Highest Mountain (Hearts of Montana Book One) by Misty Beller

Book Synopsis

On her way to deliver vaccines to a mining town in the Montana Territory, Ingrid Chastain never anticipated a terrible accident would leave her alone and badly injured in the wilderness.

When rescue comes in the form of a mysterious mountain man, she's hesitant to trust him, but the journey ahead will change their lives more than they could have known.

My thoughts:

I have to admit that this is the first book that I have read by Misty Beller and I realize that I am one of the very few readers to say this, but I will also admit that I will remedy this situation immediately because after finishing this novel, I am eager to read more of her work.

I am a huge fan of historical fiction and as soon as I saw the cover and read the description, I knew it would be a story that I would love but I didn't realize just how much I would love it.  The author deftly weaves a story of hardships, faith and perseverance as Ingrid Chastain and Micah Bradley face harsh weather, illness, and injury to keep a life-saving promise made by Ingrid's recently deceased father.  What these two go through is definitely not for the faint of heart but given the time period, they had no choice and they did everything humanly possible to accomplish what they set out to do. Survival was key but certainly difficult with the challenges they faced in this gripping story.

The friends they make along warmed my heart and made me wish for the group to live their best possible lives because they sure went through some difficult time to get where they needed to be. I loved everything about this book which is why I highly recommend it.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher.  Opinions expressed are my own.

The Roll of the Drums (The Amish of Weaver's Creek #2) by Jan Drexler

Book Description

Ruby Weaver's curly red hair isn't the only thing that sets her apart from her Amish community in 1863. Twenty-eight and single, Ruby doesn't believe a woman needs to be married in order to be happy. Her ailing friend Lovinia Fischer, however, has other ideas and wants Ruby to promise to marry her husband after she dies. Never imagining she'd have to fulfill that vow, Ruby agrees. And she's not the only one. Lovinia has extracted a similar promise from her husband, Gideon.

With both Ruby and Gideon reluctant to keep their promises, a compromise must be reached. Ruby will spend her days with Gideon's family--helping to raise the children and keep the house--but her nights will be spent at her sister's neighboring house. But this arrangement raises eyebrows in their conservative Amish community, and it soon becomes clear that Ruby must make a decision--marry Gideon or turn her back on her friend, the children she's grown to love . . . and their father.

My thoughts:

After having read the first book in the series, The Sound of Distant Thunder, I was eagerly anticipating this book because I absolutely wanted to return to Weaver's Creek.  The author deftly combines two of my favorite genres in this series, Amish and Historical fiction making me one happy reader.

This novel is both heartbreaking and heartwarming, with characters who are going through such difficult times themselves, but still open their hearts and homes to those in need.  It's evident how kind the Weaver family is when they open their home to the Fisher family, weary from traveling and in need of food and shelter.  I loved Lovinia Fischer immediately, she is incredibly brave, loving and selfless making her family her top priority in the face of a devastating situation.   I was pleasantly surprised by Ruby Weaver because she was fiercely independent a trait that was refreshing to see in an Amish woman living in 1863. The love and care she showed to Lovinia and her young children shows what an amazing young woman she was.

There are so many reasons to love this novel, it's well written, perfectly paced and the characters are endearing. I look forward to reading the next book in the series and think other readers will enjoy the first two books as much as I have
I received a complimentary from the publisher and have given my honest opinion.

Summer's Promise (Harvest of Hope #3) by Barbara Cameron

Book Description

Can she leave everything she knows for love?

Summer Carson has lived near the Amish community in Paradise, Pennsylvania, all her life. Now she's following in her father's footsteps and earning her degree in agricultural science so she can continue his work helping local farmers.

In her job at the county extension office, Summer moves between the Englisch and the Amish worlds. While she sometimes finds herself speaking--and even thinking--in Pennsylvania Deitsch, the transition isn't always easy. But what has come naturally to Summer is her attraction to one of the farmers: Abram Yoder is handsome, steady, and hardworking. He's everything so many of the Englisch men she knows are not. And Summer quickly realizes that she's caught his eye as well.

Can Summer give up the comforts she's always known for a life with this Amish man? And is Abram willing to let her try?

My thoughts:

Summer's Promise is the wonderfully written novel penned by Barbara Cameron and is the third book in her Harvest of Hope series.  I loved the maturity of Summer Carson, she is a determined young woman who is following in her father's footsteps and earning a degree in agricultural science while a working part-time and helping her widowed mother.  The relationship between Summer and her mother is sweet and I love how they take care of and look out for each other.
That is a theme throughout this book, people helping each other, a community with kind, hardworking people who genuinely care about others, both Englisch and Amish  lending a helping hand to those who need it.

I loved Abram Yoder from the beginning, his charm and kindness was delightful and his devotion to his Amish faith was never in question. His gentleness with animals was really what made him become a favorite  of mine in this book.  There was never a doubt in my mind that he and Summer would become friends and I appreciate the way the author wrote their relationship, taking care to nurture it.

I thought it was wonderful that Summer's father is remembered so fondly by the community and keeping his memory alive felt so right in this story because it's all about friends, family and community throughout this well written and well paced novel.  This can easily be read as a standalone and is suitable for readers from the young to the young at heart.

I received a copy of this book from Kregel Publishing Blog Tours.  Opinions expressed are my own.

An Amish Second Christmas by Shelley Shepard Gray, Patricia Johnson, Virginia Wise

Book Description

For the Amish, the day after Christmas is for family, feasting, and exchanging simple gifts. And for three different couples, it will bring another precious chance for love . . .

THEIR SECOND CHANCE
New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Shelley Shepard Gray
Amish nanny Hannah Eicher never thought she'd ever see Rob Prince again. There was no way a relationship between her and the handsome English fireman could overcome her family's objections--and their personal differences. But when he saves her from a sudden blaze, Hannah longs to see if they can turn holiday hope into a lifetime of happiness . . .

HIS AMISH ANGEL * Patricia Johns
She's too outspoken to be a proper Amish wife. So as advice columnist "Miss Amish," Maggie Lapp helps Amish and English with their romantic problems. But when her tradition-minded former fianc accidentally reveals her secret, Maggie will need more than a miracle to make things right--and find a perfect love for all the Christmases to come . . .

AN HEIRLOOM CHRISTMAS * Virginia Wise
Rachel Miller won't let her disability keep her from selling heirloom plants and proving she can be independent. She certainly doesn't need reckless Joseph Webber working at her greenhouse to pay off a disastrous Rumspringa stunt. But she and Joseph have more in common than they think--and their surprising holiday partnership might just blossom into forever joy . . .

My thoughts:

As soon as I saw this collection of novellas on Netgalley, I immediately requested it. The cover is absolutely beautiful and it's never too early for me to read a Christmas book. Each of the three authors penned three well written and interesting stories that were thoroughly enjoyable.

I am a fan of both Ms. Gray and Ms. Johnson but Ms. Wise is a new to me author
and I thoroughly enjoyed her writing and will read more of her work.   I didn't have a favorite in this collection because  I thought they were heartwarming, sweet stories with wonderful characters.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley but was under no obligation to write a review.  Opinions expressed are my own.

A Distance Too Grand by Regina Scott

Book Synopsis

When a spunky photographer wrangles her way onto an 1871 survey crew of the Grand Canyon she thinks nothing can stand in her way. But her mind changes when she finds out she'll be working alongside the one man she doesn't want to fall in love with.

My thoughts:

A Distance Too Grand is the first book in the America Wonders Collection and it is a wonderful first installment in this series.  I was initially drawn to the gorgeous cover plus I like the authors writing but once I began reading this novel, I was completely caught up in the storyline.

Meg Pero is a self-reliant, courageous young woman who has been left on her own since the death of her father and she is fully prepared to forge ahead with her plans to take over her his profession of photography. After all, she had been assisting him since she was a child so it's not like she was a novice.  However, there are always some naysayers but after awhile Captain Ben Coleridge concedes and gives Meg permission to accompany the survey crew.

There are several instantly likeable characters in addition to Meg and Ben who made this well written, well paced and unique novel a joy to read.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher.  All opinions are my own..

The Secret Life of Mrs. London by Rebecca Rosenberg #HFVBT Blog Tours

by Rebecca Rosenberg</h3>
Publication Date: January 30, 2018
Lake Union Publishing
eBook &amp; Paperback; 348 Pages

Genre: Historical Fiction

San Francisco, 1915. As America teeters on the brink of world war, Charmian and her husband, famed novelist Jack London, wrestle with genius and desire, politics and marital competitiveness. Charmian longs to be viewed as an equal partner who put her own career on hold to support her husband, but Jack doesn’t see it that way…until Charmian is pulled from the audience during a magic show by escape artist Harry Houdini, a man enmeshed in his own complicated marriage. Suddenly, charmed by the attention Houdini pays her and entranced by his sexual magnetism, Charmian’s eyes open to a world of possibilities that could be her escape.

As Charmian grapples with her urge to explore the forbidden, Jack’s increasingly reckless behavior threatens her dedication. Now torn between two of history’s most mysterious and charismatic figures, she must find the courage to forge her own path, even as she fears the loss of everything she holds dear.

My thoughts:

I knew a little about Jack London and Harry Houdini but little about their wives, so obviously I was curious to read this novel.  I had less than favorable feelings towards jack most of the time, I found him to be selfish and kind of annoying at times but that is probably an accurate description of his personality.  Jack and Charmaine had an interesting marriage and I found her to be more than accommodating to his every whim.
Having said that, Charmaine wasn't really a person who I liked too much either.

They had some excitement in their lives and had an interesting group of friends and acquaintances which is where Harry and Bess Houdini make their way into the storyline.  I have to confess to liking Bess much more than I thought I would.  She was a little odd but I'm okay with that because it added to her appeal.  I thought the relationships between the couple was unusual but I haven lived the lives they did, I'm not creative or enjoy the limelight as they did, so I don't know how I would behave in their circumstances or in that time period.

Overall, I think the author wrote a fascinating story but it won't be for everyone due to the promiscuity of the main characters and their escapades.  I did like that the author put a quote by Jack London at the beginning of chapters.

I received a complimentary copy of this book through HFVBT.

Praise for The Secret Life of Mrs. London

“An impressively original and exceptionally well-crafted novel by an author who is a master of character- and narrative-driven storytelling, Rebecca Rosenberg’s The Secret Life of Mrs. London is an inherently riveting and thoroughly reader-engaging story from beginning to end and feature[es] many an unexpected plot twist and turn" -Midwest Book Review

“Interesting, and based on the actual lives of the participants…Learning more about Jack London was enjoyable, as well as seeing early feminist examples" - Historical Novel Society

“…Rosenberg paints an immensely intriguing portrait of a marriage and tells it in an accomplished lyrical prose that captures each moment with poetic intensity.”—Prairies Book Review

“The Secret Life of Mrs. London is a riveting behind-the-scenes look at the marriage of Jack and Charmian London, both fascinating and complicated characters with rich inner lives that Rosenberg conveys in crisp yet poetic prose. This contemporary historical fiction raises questions that are still relevant today about what makes a good marriage, and whether creativity and stability are incompatible. A rich, resonant, deeply satisfying novel sure to delight and leave readers thinking long after they put it down.” -Malena Watrous, author of If You Follow Me and Sparked!, and director of the Stanford Continuing Studies Program in Novel Writing

“The Secret Life of Mrs. London is a heart-wrenching portrait of a marriage between two people who utterly depend on one another, but ultimately aren’t enough for each other. With skillful precision of language, Rosenberg weaves a narrative that defines the complexities of love, passion, and art. This is a perceptive, deeply moving novel by a great new talent about a couple who has gone unnoticed in historical fiction until now. Anyone who has ever loved another person will want to read this book.” --Victoria Kelly, author of Mrs. Houdini: A Novel

“One of Houdini’s best kept secrets was his affair with Charmian London in 1918. Now Rebecca Rosenberg tells the story using an elegant blend of fact and fiction, creating a Houdini book like no other. The Secret Life of Mrs. London is a true peek behind the curtain and a page-turner.”-John Cox, Wild about Harry
