Buried Cold Case Secrets by Sami A. Abrams

Searching for her best friend’s remains could help forensic anthropologist Melanie Hutton regain her memories of when they were both kidnapped—unless the killer gets to Melanie first. For her safety, Melanie must rely on Detective Jason Cooper, who still blames her for his sister’s death. Can Jason set the past aside to solve the cold case

My thoughts:

Buried Cold Case Secrets is the debut novel by Sami A. Abrams; however, this certainly does not seem like a debut novel.  It is so well written, with well-defined characters and a fast-paced storyline that I was completely immersed from beginning to end.

I feared for the safety of Melanie Hutton, I mean she seriously had me urging her to be careful at every turn.  Luckily, Jason Cooper is on the case.  Melanie and Jason have a history and it’s safe to say, he’s not ready to be friendly towards her which added an interesting twist to the plot.  Speaking of twists, there are plenty along with the perfect amount of suspense and action.

Overall, I thought this was a wonderful debut novel and one that I highly recommend.  I cannot wait to read more of this authors work.

A Season of Change (Amish Inn #3) by Beth Wiseman

Finding peace means letting go of the past—and embracing the change that is to come.

Sisters Esther and Lizzie have a new employee, Rose Petersheim, to help them tend to The Peony Inn. But their old matchmaking ways have stayed the same. The sisters focus their efforts on the lovely twenty-five-year-old Rose. Though Rose is witty and outspoken, her nervous chattering makes her the best match for someone calm and good at listening. Someone like Benjamin—the handsome handyman who recently moved to town.

But when Esther receives an anonymous love letter and flowers, Rose’s love life is no longer the only one capturing the sisters’ attention. As they sleuth around searching for Esther’s secret admirer, they uncover that their grumpy renter, Gus, has a secret of his own that could bring about a difficult change in all their lives. And their continued meddling in Rose’s affairs reveals she, too, is hiding something—an old wound that could threaten her future happiness.

As Rose, Lizzie, Esther, and Gus struggle to release the weight of their pasts, they discover that although people are complicated, love doesn’t need to be.

This charming third installment of the Amish Inn series from bestselling author Beth Wiseman is a picture of loss and healing in which forgiveness will prove to be the greatest act of love.

    My thoughts:

It was good to visit The Peony Inn again in the 3rd book in this series by Ms. Wiseman.  I have loved this series from the very first book and I absolutely adore the two sisters who own and operate the Inn.  Esther and Lizzie are the sisters who hire the sweetest and somewhat funny helpers and, in this book, they sure have their hands full with the talkative but sweet Rose.  Did I mention the sisters are also matchmakers? They may have missed the mark when they thought the chatty Rose would be a good match for the shy, quiet Benjamin.

However helpful the sisters think they are, they sometimes don’t give the best advice which made for a funny and sweet storyline.

There are also characters from the first two books that still play an important role in the storyline.  I will admit that I didn’t expect to shed any tears while reading this, but boy was I wrong. Some characters just become more endearing to you without you realizing how much you care about them, which I found to be true in this novel.

This was my favorite book in the series and I will miss them and The Peony Inn.   I highly recommend.

Yukon Justice (Alaska K-9 Unit #7) by Dana Mentink

    Sabotage on a family ranch…

    this K-9’s on the case.

When her estranged uncle attempts to sabotage her family’s reindeer ranch, K-9 team assistant Katie Kapowski heads home to help save it—and becomes his target. With their rocky past, Alaska State Trooper Brayden Ford and his furry partner are the last team Katie wants assigned to protect her. But with the ranch under siege, they must work together…or risk falling victim to a killer.

    My thoughts:

Another exciting book by Ms. Mentink that was hard to put down.  I love her writing, her characters and the situations she puts them in.  In Yukon Justice I actually learned about a reindeer ranch which was interesting, but also set the stage for the thrilling storyline.  This was another one of those books that had me on the edge of my seat and truthfully, that’s what I love about this author.

I loved the characters in this fast-paced novel although if I had to pick a favorite it would be Ella, the K-9.  I love animals in a novel and Ella was extra special. Yukon Justice is the 7th book in the series, but it can definitely can be read as a standalone.   A quick, suspenseful novel that is worthy of the 5 stars I gave it.

    Christmas Grace by Mindy Steele

Second chances and the Christmas spirit abound in Mindy Steele’s heartwarming novel, one of faith, love, and the power of community.

Grace Miller believed herself in love with the charming Englischer who eventually broke her heart. Now alone except for the secret life growing inside her, she arrives in the unfamiliar small village of Walnut Ridge, Kentucky, to hide and hopefully gain forgiveness.

She is pleasantly surprised, however, to find a tight-knit, welcoming group who help her heart grow right alongside her belly. And with the holidays around the corner, there’s plenty of preparations to occupy her mind. Also occupying her mind? Her strong, protective neighbor, Cullen Graber, the town’s blacksmith, who seems intent on not allowing her to ever suffer alone.

Cullen Graber gave up on love after too many losses early in life. He planned to live out his days focusing on his smithy business, yet the beautiful and mysterious Grace refuses to leave his thoughts. But can they open their hearts to God’s grace and create a new family together before Grace must return home?

    My thoughts:

I loved this book so much that I read it twice. I absolutely adored Grace Miller, my heart ached for her and the situation she found herself in after discovering she is expecting a child.  She showed bravery and determination that I couldn’t begin to fathom after she’s sent to the small village of Walnut Ridge, Kentucky.    Most everyone in the community was warm and welcoming, doing what they could to help her, but, the one person who helped her the most soon became one of my favorite characters.  It would be almost impossible not to love Cullen Graber, the blacksmith and neighbor who tried to make life as easy as possible for Grace.

There is so much to love about this book, from the memorable characters, the perfectly paced storyline to the jaw-dropping revelation that took me completely by surprise.  Kudos to the author on another must read book. I recommend this 5-star book to anyone who enjoys well-written novels and this is the perfect for this time of year.

I received a copy from the publisher through Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

Love on the Range (Brother's in Arms #3) Mary Connealy

Wyatt Hunt is temporarily bedridden and completely miserable. Somehow Molly Garner's limited skills have made her the most qualified in their circle to care for Wyatt. But by the time he's healed, she's fed up with him and the whole ungrateful family. For even worse than his grumpiness were the few unguarded moments when he pulled at her heartstrings, and she has long determined to never marry.

Molly gets a job as the housekeeper at Oliver Hawkins's ranch. But really she's with the Pinkertons, spying to find out if Hawkins has abused women and if he's guilty of murder.

Wyatt refuses to let her risk it alone, convincing Hawkins that he's abandoning his own ranch, angered by his two brothers' coming to claim a big chunk of it.

But when another Pinkerton agent gets shot, they realize Hawkins isn't the only danger. The Hunt brothers will have to band together to face all the troubles of life and love that suddenly surround them.

    My thoughts:

Love on the Range is the third book in this series by Ms. Connealy, and I am sorry to see it end. I started to fall in love with this merry band of misfits as they are thrown together by a father who has kept so many secrets from his family or families.

I loved catching up with the characters to see what funny and dangerous situations they would find themselves in.  I love the way this author crafts characters who you care about and what happens in their lives.  This series is filled with unforgettable characters, a storyline that keeps the reader engaged and, in this book, a satisfying ending to this series.

I received a copy from the publisher.  All opinions are my own.

Freedom's Song by Kim Vogel Sawyer

Her voice made her a riverboat's darling--and its prisoner. Now she's singing her way to freedom in this powerful novel from the bestselling author of The Librarian of Boone's Hollow.

"[An] enjoyable faith-filled adventure . . . Sawyer's episodic narrative and rich assortment of characters fighting for freedom provide the story with many twists and unexpected side-plots."--Publishers Weekly

Indentured servant Fanny Beck has been forced to sing for riverboat passengers since she was a girl. All she wants is to live a quiet, humble life with her family as soon as her seven-year contract is over. However, when she discovers that the captain has no intention of releasing her, she seizes a sudden opportunity to escape--an impulse that leads Fanny to a group of enslaved people who are on their own dangerous quest for liberty. . . .

Widower Walter Kuhn is overwhelmed by his responsibilities to his farm and young daughter, and now his mail-order bride hasn't arrived. Could a beautiful stranger seeking work be the answer to his prayers? . . .

After the star performer of the River Peacock is presumed drowned, Sloan Kirkpatrick, the riverboat's captain, sets off to find her replacement. However, his journey will bring him face to face with his own past--and a deeper understanding of what it truly means to be free. . . .

Uplifting, inspiring, and grounded in biblical truth, Freedom's Song is a story for every reader who has longed for physical, emotional, or spiritual delivery.

    My thoughts:

Freedom’s Song is the well-crafted story of a young girl named Fanny.  Sadly, Fannie is an indentured servant as a singer on a paddleboat which was an interesting storyline and one that I enjoyed reading.  Fannie is such a strong young lady that I became completely caught up in her life.   Not only does Fannie escape in a thrilling, frightening way, but she manages to meet and help others along the way.

This entire novel was well worth the lack of sleep I experienced since I couldn’t put it down once I started reading it.  A fantastic historical novel filled with incredible crafted characters that you won’t soon forget.

Loss, depression, and pain face Samuel and Emma Yoder as they maneuver through their first year of marriage.

When secrets become too much to bear, Samuel and Emma pull away from each other. Will they be able to admit their fears and heartache to find their way back to God?

Young love is tested in this first book of The Amish Women of Lawrence County Series.

Adhering to their Old Order ways means they must turn their backs on the truth they find in Jesus. Will this young couple be able to step out in faith to save both their marriage and their community?

    My thoughts:

Emma’s story is both heartbreaking and heartwarming.  I loved the characters and I loved every word written by Ms. Fredrychowski. The storyline pulled me in from the very beginning and held my interest throughout.

Emma’s journey is one that was difficult but totally worth it in the end.  I’m excited to read the next book in the series to find out what the author has in store for the Amish Women of Lawrence Country.

Behind Love's Wall (Doors to the Past) by Carrie Fancett Pagels

The Grand Hotel Slowly Reveals Her Secrets

Visit historic American landmarks through the Doors to the Past series. History and today collide in stories full of mystery, intrigue, faith, and romance.

Two successful women, a hundred-and-twenty-years apart, build walls to protect their hearts. Modern-day Willa, a successful interior decorator, is chosen to consult for the Grand Hotel’s possible redesign. She discovers a journal detailing the struggles of a young woman, Lily—which reveals dark secrets. The renowned singer wasn’t who she pretended to be. As Willa reaches out to Lily’s descendant, a charismatic and prominent landscape artist, she lets down her guard. Should she share the journal with him, or once again erect a wall as she struggles to redesign both the Grand and her life?

    My thoughts:

I love a dual timeline story and I loved most everything about this one.  I absolutely adored the story of Lily, a singer who lived 125 years in the past from present day Willa.  I could have read Lily’s story throughout the novel and never tire of it.  The problem I had was with Willa and her story which I unfortunately didn’t care for. I didn’t care for a few of the present-day characters so I never became engaged in that storyline.

I have enjoyed other books by this author and this series and look forward to reading more from both the author and the publisher.

Nathan Hardee may look like a mountain man, but he once ruled the halls of high society. He left all that behind after his father broke under financial pressure from Kincaid. To best Kincaid now, Nathan agrees to guide Cora up the mountain.

Climbing Rainier will require all of Cora's strength and will lead her and Nathan to rediscover their faith in God and humanity. These two loners make unlikely partners in righting a wrong and may just discover that only together is the view most glorious.

    My thoughts:

I have loved this series, each of the books has held my attention throughout, but I will have to say, this is my favorite so far.  Historical fiction is one of favorite genres and in my opinion this author is one of the best writers in this genre.  She brings her characters to life along with the beautiful scenery that I have only seen in photos.

I felt like I was with the marvelous characters as they set out to climb to the top of Mount Ranier. I loved everything about this novel and hope there will be more to come in this series.

A Christmas in the Alps by Melody Carlson

                                                                            About the book

After a time of heartache and loss, Simone Winthrop discovers a tantalizing letter from her French great-grandmother, which seems to suggest that she is heir to a family treasure. Ever practical, Simone assumes the claim is baseless, but her best friend encourages her to find out for sure. Despite her deep-rooted fear of flying, Simone boards a jet to travel to Paris at Christmastime to uncover the truth.

During the long flight, Simone meets the charming Kyle Larsson, who's on his way to France to become an apprentice clockmaker. Though they abruptly part ways, an unexpected rendezvous in the French Alps at Simone's family's clock factory may lead to the discovery of the family treasure . . . and so much more.

For anyone who is wearying of staying home, Melody Carlson invites you to spend Christmas with her in the beautiful French Alps this year. So pull on your mittens, tie your scarf tight, and prepare yourself for a magical mountain holiday.

    My thoughts:

I always look forward to Melody Carlson’s Christmas books, and how gorgeous is this cover?  As for the storyline, it was incredibly sweet and well-paced and I loved both Simone and Kyle.  I actually preferred Kyle because he was kind, considerate all the while being the perfect traveling companion to Simone.

Simone surprised me when she agreed to go travel to Paris in search of a treasure, she learns of a letter written by her French great-grandmother.  It struck me as odd that with her fear of flying she would agree to fly so far from home and also make the trip on her own, but I respect that kind of bravery. I enjoyed taking the journey with her and Kyle.

Overall, I enjoyed this latest Christmas book by Ms. Carlson and think it’s a perfect start to season.  I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Christmas Comes to Morning Star (Maidels of Morning Star #3) by Charlotte Hubbard

Founded by five unmarried and enterprising Amish maidels, the new Morning Star Marketplace in small-town Missouri is preparing for a joyous Christmas season. But will the holiday also bring unexpected tidings of love?

Twin sisters Molly and Marietta Helfing are eagerly anticipating Christmas, with Marietta fully recovered from cancer and their noodle making business thriving. But Molly clearly misses having former tenant Pete Shetler and his rambunctious dog, Riley, around. Marietta can’t ignore Molly’s feelings for Pete—or the anxiety it stirs within her. Convinced her illness has made her unmarriageable, Marietta wonders what kind of life she’ll have if her sister marries—despite Molly’s promise to never leave her behind. . .

Then a fire destroys the home of Amish neighbors and Molly and Marietta graciously make room for widower Glenn Detweiler, his dat, and his two young boys. When Pete returns to help the family rebuild, Molly relishes her reunion with the handsome carpenter, while Marietta delights in mothering Glenn’s boys—and is surprised by her poignant bond with their quiet, brooding father. Soon everyone is wondering if this season will bring the blessing of a merry double wedding to Morning Star . . .

    My thoughts:

I loved returning to Morning Star and catching up with the residents of this community, especially the maidels who will capture your heart.  They are five friends going through ups and downs, offering encouragement to each other as they face whatever challenges life gives them.  This novel focuses on twin sisters, Molly and Marietta Hefling the owners and operators of a successful noodle making business. There is so much to celebrate, Christmas is almost upon them, Marrietta is fully recovered from cancer, but there is a bit of sadness as Marietta misses their former tenant, Pete Shetler.

There is so much to love about this book, seeing the growth and maturity of some of my favorites that I’ve grown fond of, seeing the faith, love and friendship continue.  This book is emotional, sweet and a wonderful addition to the series.

Charlotte Hubbard has once again crafted memorable characters, an amazing storyline and a warm, loving community and I’m excited to see what she has in store for her readers in future books,

The Secret Keepers of Old Depot Grocery by Amanda Cox

Present Day. After tragedy plunges her into grief and unresolved anger, Sarah Ashby returns to her childhood home determined to finally follow her long-denied dream of running Old Depot Grocery alongside her mother and grandmother. But when she arrives, her mother, Rosemary, announces to her that the store is closing. Sarah and her grandmother, Glory Ann, make a pact to save the store, but Rosemary has worked her entire life to make sure her daughter never follows in her footsteps. She has her reasons--but she'll certainly never reveal the real one.

1965. Glory Ann confesses to her family that she's pregnant with her deceased fiancé's baby. Pressured into a marriage of convenience with a shopkeeper to preserve the family reputation, Glory Ann vows never to love again. But some promises are not as easily kept as she imagined.

This dual-timeline story from Amanda Cox deftly explores the complexity of a mother-daughter dynamic, the way the secrets we keep shape our lives and the lives of others, and the healing power of telling the truth.

    My thoughts:

The Secret Keepers of Old Depot Grocery is one of my favorite books that I have read this year, maybe even one my favorites in the past few years.  I did not want this book to end, it was that good and I’m all about a dual-time line story.

I loved Rosemary, Sarah and Glory Ann, the Old Depot Grocery and the storyline swept me away with both the good and bad times the three ladies experienced.  There are few masterful storytellers, but Ms. Cox definitely is one of the best as far as I’m concerned as she brought her characters to life and crafted a story that will stay with me for a very long time.  I could easily imagine each character in their daily lives, I felt their heartache and how they dealt with the challenges they faced.

This must-read novel deserves all the stars, unfortunately I could only give it five. Amanda Cox is now one of my must-read authors.

I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher.  All opinions are my own.

Beyond the Tides by Liz Johnson

When Meg Whitaker's father decides to sell the family's lobster-fishing business to her high school nemesis, she sets out to prove she should inherit it instead. Though she's never had any interest in running the small fleet--or even getting on a boat due to her persistent seasickness--she can't stand to see Oliver Ross take over. Not when he ruined her dreams for a science scholarship and an Ivy League education ten years ago.

Oliver isn't proud of what he did back then. Angry and broken by his father walking out on his family, he lashed out at Meg--an innocent bystander. But owning a respected fishing fleet on Prince Edward Island is the opportunity of a lifetime, and he's not about to walk away just because Meg wants him to.

Meg's father has the perfect solution: Oliver and Meg must work the business together, and at the end of the season, he'll decide who gets it. Along the way, they may discover that their stories are more similar than they thought . . . and their dreams aren't what they expected.

Bestselling author Liz Johnson invites you back to Prince Edward Island for a brand-new series about family, forgiveness, and the kind of love that heals all wounds.

    My thoughts:

I don’t normally read too much contemporary romance novels, but, because I enjoy this authors work, I knew it would be a good and interesting read. It actually surpassed my expectations as I loved pretty much everything about it.  The setting was beautiful and although I didn’t think the storyline of a lobster fishing business would be to my liking, it actually held my attention.

Meg Whitaker and Oliver Ross are quite a pair as they vie to be the one to take over the Whitaker family business as Mr. Whitaker is selling it to care for his wife. Meg hasn’t shown an interest in taking over the business, that is until Oliver expresses an interest.   As much as I liked all the characters, I have to admit to being fonder of Oliver than some of the others.   There relationship is filled with ups and downs and a few things that made me chuckle.

Overall, I thought this was a wonderful book with a perfectly paced, interesting storyline.

I received a copy from the publisher.  All opinions are my own.

Undercurrent of Secrets (Doors to the Past) by Rachel Scott McDaniel

Two women, a century apart, are bound by a haunting secret aboard a legendary steamboat.

Walk through Doors to the Past via a new series of historical stories of romance and adventure.

As wedding coordinator for the 100-year-old steamboat The Belle of Louisville, Devyn Asbury takes pride in seeing others’ dreams come true, even though her engagement had sunk like a diamond ring to the bottom of the Ohio River. When the Belle becomes a finalist in the Timeless Wedding Venue contest, Devyn endeavors to secure the prestigious title with hopes to reclaim some of her professional dreams. What she hadn’t planned on was Chase Jones showing up with a mysterious photo from the 1920s.

A century earlier, Hattie Louis is as untamable as the rivers that raised her. As the adopted daughter of a steamboat captain, her duties range from the entertainment to cook. When strange incidents occur aboard the boat, Hattie’s determined to discover the truth. Even if that means getting under First Mate Jack Marshall’s handsome skin.

    My thoughts:

Rachel Scott McDaniel has penned an amazing dual timeline novel, that had me engaged throughout. It is the intriguing story involving the 100-year-old steamboat The Belle of Louisville and modern-day couple, Devyn Ashley and Chase Jones with a glimpse into Doors of the Past with Hattie Louis and First Mate Jack Marshall.

I loved both couples, but I admit to being more interested in Hattie and Jack.  There is an air of mystery and suspense that kept me guessing until the very end.  The timelines were woven together seamlessly adding to my overall enjoyment of this novel.  I highly recommend this must-read book.

Yours is the Night by Amanda Dykes

Private Matthew Petticrew arrives in France as part of the American Expeditionary Forces, an arrival which a war-weary France desperately hopes will help to end the turmoil. Having faced unthinkable things on the front, he is captivated by the sound of a lullaby, sung by a voice so pure he knows he must have imagined it. But rumors sweep through the trenches like wildfire, dubbing the voice "The Angel of Argonne," a mysterious presence who leaves behind wreaths on unmarked graves and footprints in the war-pocked soil.

Raised wild in the depths of the Forest of Argonne, France, Mireilles finds her world rocked when war comes crashing into the idyllic home she has always known, taking much from her. When Matthew discovers Mireilles, three things are clear: She is alone in the world, she cannot stay, and he and his two unlikely companions might be the only ones who can get her to safety.

    My thoughts:

This beautifully crafted novel got all my emotions flowing in the best possible way.  I’m sure my words will be inadequate in this review and that seems okay with me as there are no words to describe just how amazing this book is.

So, I will just say that Amanda Dykes is a masterful storyteller and what a story she has penned in the pages of, Yours is the Night.  Her characters are memorable, their stories are both heartbreaking and heartwarming.  I was completely immersed in this book from beginning to end and as much as I wanted to find out what was going to happen, I didn’t want to see the story end.  I have already read this book twice and will definitely read it again.  This will be on my keeper shelf and if you’re a fan of historical fiction or a well written novel, you’ll want to get a copy as soon as possible.

To Write a Wrong (The Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency #2) by Jen Turano

Miss Daphne Beekman is a mystery writer by day, inquiry agent by night. Known for her ability to puzzle out plots, she happily works behind the scenes for the Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency, staying well away from danger. However, when Mr. Herman Henderson arrives on the doorstep of the agency, desperate for someone to investigate numerous attempts on his life, Daphne soon finds herself in the thick of a case she's determined to solve.

Mr. Herman Henderson is also a mystery writer, but unlike the dashing heroes he pens, he prefers living a quiet life, determined to avoid the fate of his adventurous parents, who perished while searching for the Lost City of Gold.

As the list of suspects grows and sinister plots are directed at Daphne, the situation quickly deteriorates, and a revealed secret jeopardizes their newfound affection. Only time will tell if Daphne will be able to regain Herman's trust and save both their lives.

    My thoughts:

Just when I think Jen Turano can’t possibly make me giggle throughout another one of her novels, she proves me wrong.  Her writing never fails to bring me hours of entertainment, her adorable, loveable characters are guaranteed to keep me turning pages as fast as I can.  In this book, Daphne Beekman is a mystery writer by day, inquiry agent by night and she is my new favorite character crafted by Ms. Turano.  That is subject to change as soon as the next book in the series is released, it’s not that I’m fickle, it’s just that I know this author keeps getting better all the time.

The secondary characters are all fun to get to know, too.  Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this book, and read the first one in the series if you have a chance.

The Nature of Small Birds by Susie Finkbeiner

In 1975, three thousand children were airlifted out of Saigon to be adopted into Western homes. When Mindy, one of those children, announces her plans to return to Vietnam to find her birth mother, her loving adoptive family is suddenly thrown back to the events surrounding her unconventional arrival into their lives.

Though her father supports Mindy's desire to meet her family of origin, he struggles privately with an unsettling fear that he'll lose the daughter he's poured his heart into. Mindy's mother undergoes the emotional roller coaster inherent in the adoption of a child from a war-torn country, discovering the joy hidden amid the difficulties. And Mindy's sister helps her sort through relics that whisper of the effect the trauma of war has had on their family--but also speak of the beauty of overcoming.

Told through three strong voices in three compelling timelines, The Nature of Small Birds is a hopeful story that explores the meaning of family far beyond genetic code.

    My thoughts:

As soon as I see a book written by Susie Finkbeiner, I automatically know it will be a must read for me.  She never disappoints, her characters come to life before your eyes, they become people you want to get better acquainted with and they will live on in your hearts and minds long after you finish the novel.

The Nature of Small Birds is the story of a family who adopts a young Vietnamese girl and is told through different family member and different timelines.  It’s a beautifully written story and one you will not want to end. This is one that you will definitely want to read.

Book 1: Framed in Death Valley
Book 2: Missing in the Desert

    My thoughts:

When I open a book by Dana Mentink, I know that I’m going to be unavailable to the outside world until I finish reading it.  I love how she has the ability to keep me on the edge of my seat throughout her novels and this one did just that.

From the first page when shots are fired, I knew I would love Seth and Maria Castillo and of course every character I met in this must-read novel   I love an action packed, suspenseful, well written novel and as usual, Ms. Mentink didn’t disappoint.   Although this is the second book in the series, it can be read as a stand alone, but since the first book is just as good, I suggest reading both of them.  I cannot wait for the next book to see what wild, nail-biting ride the author will take her readers on.

I received a complimentary copy of this book.  All opinions are my own.

The Walnut Creek Wish (Creektown Discoveries #1) by Wanda E. Brunstetter

                                                                         About the book

An Antique Store Becomes a Place of Healing for Broken Hearts

Welcome to Walnut Creek, Ohio, where Orley and Lois Troyer own an antique store they call “Memory Keepers.” Though knowledgeable in antiques and their repair, their real talent is in mentoring folks who are hurting and don’t even know it. Enter Jeff, a restaurateur, and Rhonda, a hotel manager, who recently moved to Amish country for the slow pace, but the change of scenery puts even more stress on their already strained marriage. Will an antique sled be the last straw, or will it lead to unexpected revelations and the fulfillment of dreams?

    My thoughts::

This is the first book in a new series by Ms. Brunstetter with a mix of Amish and English characters.  To be honest, it took some time for me to get interested in the storyline, but, once I did, it was more enjoyable than I expected it to be. I wasn’t always sympathetic with Jeff and Rhonda, but, then I remember being in their position with working hard, long hours and rarely having time for themselves.  I think a lot of couples have either been in their situation or perhaps going through that currently.

Moving farther away from their jobs and enjoying a home life was good for them in some ways while proving difficult for them in other ways.  Meeting the Amish couple who own and operate Memory Keepers, an antique store was not only good for them, but, also good for this reader of this novel, because they were my favorites.  I absolutely adored them and could easily imagine them having their lunch in their store and greeting their customers. The author brought Orley and Lois Troyer to life before my eyes with her vivid descriptions of these two delightful characters.  I hope they will be brought back throughout the series.

Overall, I liked the premise, the characters and the outcome for Jeff and Rhonda.  I’m looking forward to the next book in the series and hoping to check in with all four characters in this book, and meeting new ones in the second book.

An Amish Flower Farm by Mindy Steele

    She grows flowers.
    He raises bees for honey.
    They help each other out,
    because that’s what neighbors do…

Belinda Graber loves growing flowers for her family to sell at the Amish marketplace. Venturing beyond the farm to sell them in town, though, is out of the question. People would stare at the birthmark on her cheek, and she’s dealt with enough teasing in her life.

As a beekeeper, Adam Fisher knows how blessed he is to live next door to the Grabers’ greenhouses and fields. But when his father is injured, Adam has to take a job at the local mill. How will he manage the honey harvest?

Adam and Belinda make a deal: if she tends his hives, he’ll sell her flowers in town.

Belinda’s sure that her growing feelings for Adam could never be returned. Meanwhile, Adam can’t help but notice how his shy neighbor charms the bees…or is he the one being charmed? Because his last courtship ended badly, Adam tells himself this arrangement is strictly business, even if Belinda is sweet as honey.

This uplifting Amish romance includes a free Hallmark original recipe

    My thoughts:

I love finding a new to me author, especially this one because she has penned a beautifully written novel.  Ms. Steel crafted charming characters who stole my heart as soon as I met them and I really did feel like I met them, that’s how real they seemed.

I loved Belinda Graber and could easily imagine her tending to her flowers, they brought so much joy into her otherwise lonely life.  I felt so bad for all she had gone through because of a birthmark and the teasing she had dealt with since childhood.  I didn’t think I could love her anymore until I met Adam Fisher.  He was so sweet and kind to her just as she was to him.  I loved them separately, but absolutely adored them together.

Belinda and Adam are both hardworking, they have so much they want to accomplish, they just have to learn that’s okay to ask for help from others and more than okay to let your true feelings be known to others.   I loved seeing the growth in both of these characters and wanted them to live their best possible lives.  If you like a clean well written book with charming characters, you will definitely want to pick up a copy of this one.

Between the Wild Branches (The Covenant House #2) by Connilyn Cossette

Ten years ago Lukio fled Kiryat-Yearim, where he'd been adopted by the Levite family who guarded the Ark of the Covenant. Feeling betrayed by everyone, he returned to his birthplace in Philistia to become a famous fighter. Now the champion of Ashdod, Lukio has achieved every goal with the help of his ruthless cousin. But just as he is set to claim the biggest prize of all, the daughter of the king, his past collides with his present in the form of Shoshana.

After a heartbreaking end to her secret friendship with Lukio, Shoshana thought to never see the boy with the dual-colored eyes and the troubled soul again. But when she is captured in a Philistine raid and enslaved in Ashdod, she is surprised to find that the brutal fighter known as Demon-Eyes is Lukio himself.

With explosive secrets and unbreakable vows standing between them, finding a way to freedom for both may cost them everything.

    My thoughts:

I haven't read the first book in the series, but, still enjoyed this novel.  The story of Lukio and Shoshana is beautifully written although it took me some time to get interested to be honest. Its probably because I should have read the first book in the series. I really got caught up in this book after a few chapters and I loved it more than I thought I would.

Truthfully, I have only started reading Biblical fiction within the last few years and it isn't always a genre I gravitate towards. but, after hearing so many things about this author, I knew I had to read it. I am so glad that I did because Ms. Cossette brought this story to life for me, from the time period she wrote about, the not so good things and al of the wonderful things. I will read more from this author and urge others to do the same.

    My thoughts:

What a beautifully written story that kept me engaged from beginning to end.  I grew rather fond of Dixie Yoder and Gideon Petersheim as their story progressed and I wanted them to live their best, possible lives.

I think we all know that life will throw us a few curveballs, which can be devastating, and not always easy to cope with which is what Gideon has to come to terms with in this touching story.  Pockets of Purpose is the second book in the Pocket Quilt series so you may want to pick up a copy of the first book, Pockets of Promise, too.
