State of Lies by Siri Mitchell

Book Description

One woman is forced to question everything she knows in this domestic suspense novel from award-winning author Siri Mitchell.

Georgie Brennan may be a world-class quantum physicist, but she grapples with life as a single mother after her husband is killed. When she receives a message from beyond the grave, it leads her to question the details of her husband’s death
As she follows the clues he left behind, her discoveries increasingly implicate those closest to her.

When her father is nominated as the new United States Secretary of Defense, she must uncover the truth before his confirmation hearing—even as the same people who killed her husband are now after her. Nothing is at is seems. Lies are truth; enemies are friends. Even her child is at risk. As every possibility but one disappears, Georgie may find herself to be the antithesis of everything she’s thought herself to be.

My thoughts:

State of Lies is quite frankly one of the best books that I have read  in a long time.  The first night I started reading it, I stayed up reading until 3:30 am.  I was so aggravated to have to sleep but sometimes you have to listen to your body, right?   So, after sleeping a few hours, I got up, grabbed a steaming mug of coffee and happily finished reading this excellent novel.

First of all, I am very familiar with the location the author chose as her setting for this book so that was a happy coincidence but it was the fascinating storyline and the compelling characters that kept me reading as fast as I could. Just when I thought there couldn't possibly be anymore intense moments, Ms. Mitchell proved me wrong by throwing another super intense moment my way but boy did I love each and every single one. I loved the importance of each character and how involved they are in this intriguing story, including the family dog.

This book is a real page turner and totally worth the read as you'll discover when you read the story of Georgie, Sean and their young son.  The things their family experience in this artfully written book will have you on the edge of your seat while you try to figure out what is going on and if things will ever be alright for them again  This book deserves more than five stars and will definitely be on my top ten favorite books for 2019.

I received a complimentary copy of this book.  Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Under Moonlit Skies (Prairie Sky Series Book 3) by Cynthia Roemer

Book Description

Her life was planned out ~ until he rode in ~ Illinois prairie ~ 1859

After four long years away, Esther Stanton returns to the prairie to care for her sister Charlotte’s family following the birth of her second child. The month-long stay seems much too short as Esther becomes acquainted with her brother-in-law’s new ranch hand, Stewart Brant. When obligations compel her to return to Cincinnati and to the man her overbearing mother intends her to wed, she loses hope of ever knowing true happiness.

Still reeling from a hurtful relationship, Stew is reluctant to open his heart to Esther. But when he faces a life-threatening injury with Esther tending him, their bond deepens. Heartbroken when she leaves, he sets out after her and inadvertently stumbles across an illegal slave-trade operation, the knowledge of which puts him, as well as Esther and her family, in jeopardy.

My thoughts:

This entire series has been a favorite of mine with each and every novel surpassing the one before it.  I have been waiting for this one and boy was the wait worthwhile.  Ms. Roemer has a knack for crafting characters who I truly care for, I celebrate their happiness and share in their sorrows.
This storyline was captivating because I didn't expect some of the plot twists so that added to my overall enjoyment of this book.

Watching Esther grow and mature has been wonderful and I was so glad to reconnect with not only her but with Charlotte and Chad, too.   Meeting Stew was a pure delight, he is a selfless, wonderful character who deserved all the good life had to offer him.  I have loved this series and will think of the characters fondly from time to time, but I'm excited to find out what the author has in store for her readers in the future. The Prairie Sky series has been such a joy to read and I think fans of Historical and Christian fiction will enjoy the three novels as much as I have.

I received a complimentary but was under no obligation to write a review.  All opinions are my own.

King's Shadow by Angela Hunt

Book Description

Two women occupy a place in Herod's court. The first, Salome, is the king's only sister, a resentful woman who has been told she is from an inferior race, a people God will never accept or approve.

The second woman, Zara, is a lowly handmaid who serves Salome, but where Salome spies conspiracies and treachery, Zara sees hurting people in need of understanding and compassion.

Powerful and powerless, Idumean and Jew, selfish and selfless--both women struggle to reach their goals and survive in Herod the Great's tumultuous court, where no one is trustworthy and no one is safe.

My review:

This is a riveting novel of King Herod his wives, children and his sister, Salome.  Salome is a fascinating character who will do anything for her brother including keeping his descent into madness a secret.  There is plenty of palace intrigue mixed in with all of the gossip and finger pointing going on, it seemed as though the King wasn't the only one who was concerned about their power being usurped.

The one character who held my attention throughout, happens to be the fictional character named Zara a nine year old who is chosen to be Salome's handmaid. I loved how her story progressed as she grew into a young lady and finally a young woman with a child. King's Shadow is told through the POV's from both Zara and Salome with each chapter marked so the reader could follow along.  Admittedly, there are several characters with the same names so that was a bit confusing at times.

Ms. Hunt writes of the 400 years between  the Old Testament and the beginning of the New Testament and even though I haven't read the other three book in this series, I really enjoyed this one but I may read the others in the series.  It is an interesting read and fortunately the grim details of King Herod's killings aren't told in great detail.  I have started to enjoy Biblical fiction in the last few years and this is one of my favorites.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher but was under no obligation to write a review.  All opinions are my own.

A Glitter of Gold (Georgia Goast Romance #2) by Liz Johnson

Book Description

When pirate wreck tour guide Anne Norris finds evidence of an undiscovered shipwreck, she seeks the help of museum director Carter Hale to uncover the truth and treasure that could save her business.

But can she trust him with her secrets and her heart?

Hardcover, 368 pages
Published August 6th 2019 by Fleming H. Revell Company (first published August 2019)

My thoughts:

A Glitter of Gold is a delightful and intriguing read with a storyline that moves at a great pace.  I was super excited when the author revealed the existence of an old diary and how deftly the two stories were interwoven.  I have to admit to sometimes favoring one time period to another when reading novels that go between different times in history but not this time!  I'm not normally a fan of pirates or sunken treasure or at least I wasn't until I read this book.

The characters were genuinely likable, the romance was gradual and sweet.  The hunt for the shipwreck was interesting and enjoyable to read which is why I think this would be the perfect choice for a beach read.  I have only read a few books by Liz Johnson but after reading her latest release, I think it's time I read more of her writing.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher but was under no obligation to write a review.  All opinions are my own.

Standing Together Blog Tour + Giveaway

A true story of hope and courage in the face of astonishing challenges

During his fourth deployment, US Marine Corps Sergeant Carlos Evans stepped on an IED--and the loss of both legs and his left hand was just the beginning of the struggle for his life.

For the next two years, he and his wife, Rosemarie, went through the rehabilitation process together. As a nurse and mother of two young children, Rosemarie was used to caring for people, but the task of taking care of her triple-amputee husband brought new challenges every day. In addition to his limb loss, Carlos faced PTSD and developed an addiction to painkillers. He was sure Rosemarie's life would be better without him--and that it might have been better if he hadn't survived at all.

But unlike the majority of marriages put under similar strain, Carlos and Rosemarie stayed together. With the help of family, friends, and--most importantly--a strong faith, they've built a solid marriage and discovered a ministry they never expected. By the hand of God, their story, which began in devastation, has turned into one that draws in and lifts up more people than either of them would ever have dreamed.

Not only will disabled veterans and their loved ones find help here, Carlos and Rosemarie's captivating journey also speaks to those who long for stronger marriages, care for loved ones with disabilities, or are facing a new normal in their own lives, small or large. It is a powerful resource for leaning on God in the midst of life's great difficulties--and for finding ways that, through faith, profound loss can bring incredible blessing.

My thoughts:

What a powerful and inspirational story the authors share with us as they write of the horrors of the devastating injuries, Carlos suffered when he stepped on an IED in Afghanistan.   The long rcovery in the hospital along with how it effected this young family is both heartbreaking and heartwarming as they are overwhelmed with the outpouring support they receive through family, friends and others they meet throughout their ordeal.

This was a hard journey they embarked upon but through their strong belief and with lot of strenght they were able to live their new normal lives to the fullest.   I shed a few tears as I read their story and celebrated each of their victories both big and small.  Most of all, I enjoyed getting to know this wonderful family and think those who read this book will, too.  Highly recommend this book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Read with Audra book tours.  All opinions are my own.

          ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Sgt. (Ret.) Carlos R. Evans is a minister with the Assemblies of God USA, a Wounded Warrior spokesman, and a motivational speaker. Born in Puerto Rico, Carlos was an avid athlete through his high school and college years.  At university, he studied Theology and was very active in his church. When the tragic events of September 11th occurred, he felt compelled to join the family legacy of service in the US Marine Corps, and originally planned to join as a Chaplain.
Carlos served three tours of duty in Iraq and was assigned to Afghanistan for his fourth deployment. In May 2010, he was the squad leader on foot patrol when he stepped on an improvised explosive device. The blast took both of his legs and his left hand. Medically discharged after his rehab at Walter Reed, Carlos served in the Marine Corps for eight years.
Rosemarie Evans, also a native of Puerto Rico, is an experienced nurse. She is now a full-time caregiver and student working toward a master’s degree in marriage and family from Liberty University. Carlos and Rosemarie live in Orlando, Florida with their two daughters.

An interview with Carlos and Rosemarie Evans,Authors of Standing Together
Sustaining a military marriage is hard work, especially when deployments keep a family separated for prolonged periods of time. The strain is intensified when the serving spouse is injured in the field. According to the PTSD Foundation of America, an estimated two out of three marriages fail for troops suffering from combat trauma.
Carlos R. Evans and Rosemarie Evans are well aware of the difficulties, having experienced them personally.
In Standing Together: The Inspirational Story of a Wounded Warrior and Enduring Love (Kregel Publications), they share their inspirational story of facing severe injury, rehabilitation,
post-traumatic stress disorder and addiction. Theirs is a true story of hope and courage in the face of astonishing challenges.

Q: Carlos, first of all, thank you for your service to our country. Can you share a little bitabout what led you to enlist and the eight years you served in the US Marine Corps?

Carlos: Many of my family members served in Vietnam, Korea, and Operation Desert Storm. After 9/11, I felt deeply in my heart that I had to do my part by serving my country, but I also wanted to continue to share the gospel. I was in Bible college at the time and wanted to join as a chaplain. In 2004, I was watching the news and saw Marines in Iraq. I admired what they were doing, and it was in that moment I felt a strong conviction to serve. I
went to the recruiting center in Puerto Rico and joined the Marine Corps. That is a decision I will never regret, and I would do it all over again.

During my first four years of service, I did three combat deployments in Iraq. When I re-enlisted, I deployed to Afghanistan. It
was during that deployment that I was severely injured. We saw two years of rehabilitation in the hospital, then I was medically retired.

Q: You were on your fourth deployment, this time to Afghanistan, when an incident changed life as you knew it. What
happened on May 16, 2010?

Carlos: I was a Sergeant in the Marine Corps, leading a mission in Helmand Province, when we were getting ready to go back to our operation center. I walked about eight steps when I heard an explosion. I had stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED). I felt pain in my body unlike anything I had ever felt or experienced before. My Marines and Navy Corpsman kept
me alive. I lost so much blood that my medic had to put his thumb in my femoral artery to keep me alive. They asked me for my wife and daughters’ names and told me they were waiting for me back home. I was flown via medevac to the hospital in Afghanistan, and then to Germany. From Germany, I was transferred to Bethesda Naval Hospital in Washington, DC.
As a result of my injuries, I lost both of my legs above the knee and part of my left arm. I don’t remember what happened during those first few days because I was intubated and sedated.
Back home in Puerto Rico, Rosemarie and my mother received visits from Marines bringing updates about my situation. The same night I arrived at Bethesda, my wife and parents got to the hospital and waited to take care of me. To this day, I continue to meet people that took care of me in Germany and Afghanistan.
That day has become the best day of my life, and today we celebrate it as our “Alive Day.”

Q: Were deployments a source of fear in any way? Did you think about how something might happen to you during a
deployment?

Carlos: During that deployment and the three previous ones, I don’t think I ever considered that anything was going to happen to me. I personally knew others who had died and some who were badly wounded, but as a Christian, I figured God was with me and would protect me from every kind of harm. On my various furloughs, I said to friends and family members, “I’m not going to die in Iraq or Afghanistan. God has a bigger purpose for my life.”
But I also remember the day when all my family members and friends came to say goodbye. I made jokes such as, “Something is going to happen to me because this is the first time in all my deploys that everyone came here to celebrate.” Also, before deployment, I forced my wife to watch the movie Taking Chances. In the movie, Kevin Bacon is an officer that went to a house
and notified the family member about their loss. I told Rosemarie that if something happened to me in Afghanistan, the Marines would come to the front door to let her know I died in combat.
Q: Rosemarie, you write about a call that you received on May 15 from Carlos that left you unsettled and worried. Can you tell us more about that day and the days that followed? How long did you have to live in uncertainty about Carlos’
condition?

Rosemarie: That Saturday night I was at my uncle’s wedding. On my way back home, I received Carlos’s call. I was happy to hear from him because he couldn’t call often. But when I answered the phone, I noticed something wasn’t right. Carlos was responding flat and sometimes he was quiet. He told me, “Things here are not the same as in Iraq. You know that I love you, and I love my daughters.”
When he said those words, I knew he was worried and that they were in some danger. We lost phone connection that night and I didn’t have the chance to speak to him again. Sunday passed, and I didn’t hear from him. On Monday afternoon, I received a call from the Marine Corps to let me know they would meet me at Carlos’ mother’s house. That’s when they told me Carlos was injured, but they didn’t have all the details. From that Monday until Friday, I waited each day for them to come to the house to deliver updated information about his condition.

Q: You were an experienced nurse and had training in trauma life support, but were you truly prepared to care for
Carlos when he arrived home? How did you manage taking care of Carlos and your two young daughters?

Rosemarie: As a nurse, I had the knowledge of what should I expect to see when I met Carlos at the hospital. An intubated
patient connected to a mechanical ventilator with drainages and monitors. However, at that point I had a different role. I was the wife of an injured husband. Being a nurse helped me understand procedures and prognosis, but I felt the same uncertainty, desperation, sadness and helplessness any other family member feels when a love one is going through a difficult time. I wasn’t completely prepared because it was an unexpected situation. Before leaving to go to Afghanistan, Carlos and I talked about what should I expect if I saw the Marines at the front door (that he had died in combat), but we never talked about him coming back home seriously injured. We didn’t expect that and weren’t aware of how many service members were injured in the war. When I stepped into Bethesda Hospital, it was eye opening to see how many wounded service members came back and how many families were affected.
When I first went to Bethesda, I traveled without my daughters in order to focus on my husband. Our daughters were four years old and five months old at the time. My mom took care of them in Puerto Rico at first, but as the weeks passed by, I was desperate to see my daughters. I felt conflicted between my two roles as a wife and a mom. I asked two friends in North Carolina (where we were stationed) to take care of my daughters there. That way they could bring my daughters to the hospital, or I could travel from Washington, D.C. to North Carolina to see them. When the doctor told me the recovery process could take two years, we started to make plans for how we could all be together. There were four women who were the key to finding us a place to stay and be able to travel daily to the hospital for treatments. We had to start early, at 5:30 in themorning, to have our older daughter ready for school, the younger for childcare, and Carlos ready for treatments. We started new
routines, but we also had family members that stayed with us and helped. However, we wanted to learn how to do it as a family of four. It was hard sometimes, but God helped us through.

Finding Lady Enderly by Joanna Davidson Politano

Book Description

Raina Bretton is a rag woman in London's east end when a handsome stranger appears in a dank alley and offers her a glittering smile and a chance for adventure. Rothburne Abbey has a unique position for her, one that will take her away from her hardscrabble life and give her a chance to be a lady. Things she could only dream of might be coming true. But some dreams turn out to be nightmares.

Though Raina has traded squalor for silk and satin, something about the abbey is deeply unsettling. As she wrestles with her true identity, the ruin, decay, and secrets she finds at the heart of the old mansion tear at her confidence and threaten to reveal her for who she really is. Only one man stands between her and the danger that lurks within--and only if he decides to keep her biggest secret hidden.

My thoughts:

I was in the mood for something different so I was glad to have the opportunity to read an ARC of Finding Lady Enderly.  This is the first book that I have ready by this author so I had no expectations although I have heard wonderful things about her writing and after reading this book, I have to agree with other readers, Ms. Politano is truly gifted.

Raina Britton is a unique character and that's why I liked her so much.  She's much more brave than I would ever hope to be but our circumstances are different.  I have never been in her situation so I have no idea how she desperate she must have been to escape her life as a rag woman and to accept the offer of a stranger to provide an adventure she would never have had if she chose to stay in her neighborhood.  Would I have had the nerve to throw caution to the wind and go off with a complete stranger?  No, I would not but I'm sure glad she did!

Raina has lost her one true love, Sully who was killed at sea so she figures she has nothing to lose as she embarks on her new adventure.  Sometimes things aren't what you expect them to be but you sure meet a lot of interesting people along the way.  This novel is filled with mystery, secrets, and incredible characters.  Finding Lady Enderly is a cleverly written novel which I enjoyed immensely.

Field of Redemption (The Salberton Lagacy #2) by Lori Bates Wright

Book Description

They say confession is good for the soul.
But, revealing too much could prove deadly.

When devoted governess, Abigail McFadden, discovers her charge has run off to join the Union army on his fourteenth birthday, her impetuous decision to go after him catapults her behind enemy lines and into a life-changing fight for survival.

Failing to locate the boy, Abby is stranded in Confederate Georgia with no means to get home. After taking a nursing position in a confederate hospital in Macon, she comes under suspicion as a union spy. Her only consolation is the work she does outside of the hospital walls in a shanty town of unwanted orphans.

Confederate Officer, Ian Saberton, a theological graduate of Yale, is thrust into war and forced to choose sides. His greatest struggle becomes a fight for his soul as his faith and deep convictions are put to the test.

When Sherman advances on Atlanta, Ian is sent to prepare his home state for enemy invasion. Headquartered in Macon, he encounters a town full of civilians who seem oblivious to the imminent danger bearing down on them. He and his men must see the town secured, all the while avoiding a passel of matchmaking socialites determined to see him married.

Soon, Abby is brought up on false charges and scheduled to be hanged. She has no choice but to trust the handsome Confederate officer who offers a way of escape.

But will deep secrets destroy the fragile bond between them?

My thoughts:

So, first of all this is the first book that I've read by Ms. Wright and secondly, I have found a new favorite author. This book is so good it makes me want to read more of her work and the cover is absolutely gorgeous, isn't it?

I didn't read the first book in the series but that certainly did not stop me from getting caught up in the lives of Abigail McFadden and Ian Saberton. They are wonderful characters separately and together. There are several secondary characters who rounded out this well researched and wonderful novel.  I found myself laughing and smiling at the antics of Abby and her friends which was unexpected but definitely appreciated..

I am anxious to see what the author has next for her readers because I am ready to read another one of her books.
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was under no obligation to write a review.  All opinions are my own.

The Healing Jar (The Prayer Jar # 3) by Wanda E. Brunstetter

Book Description

What if you have waited to find love only to be rejected when it finally comes?

Lenore Lapp is an Amish schoolteacher in her late twenties still living at home with her parents and grandparents. She thought love had passed her by until she meets Jesse Smucker, a widower with a baby daughter. She quickly falls in love with them both and accepts Jesse’s proposal of marriage, but Jesse breaks off their engagement when he realizes he can’t marry only for convenience.

Resigned to living single, Lenore throws herself into caring for her elders. While working in her grandmother’s garden, she digs up an old jar. Will Lenore find healing for her broken heart and solve long-buried family secrets by reading the note contained inside?

My thoughts:

The Prayer Jar series has been another wonderful one by Wanda Brunstetter but I have to say that the third and final book, The Healing Jar is my favorite book in the trilogy.  Time moves on, things change but the one constant theme in the series has been family, faith, forgiveness and love.

Willis and Mary Ruth Lapp (the grandparents) are the epitome of who I imagine when thinking of the Amish, they are wise. caring and have hearts full of love for everyone they meet and boy have they had to put those traits to use with the people that have come into their lives!  Fortunately, Sarah and Michelle have moved on with their husbands and are more settled which left Lenore to help Mary Ruth care for Willis.

I kind of adored Lenore from the beginning but once she met Jesse and started taking care of his baby, I really loved her.  Jesse is a young widower who is new to the community so I could easily imagine the offer to help him. I loved their storyline, it's fraught with highs and lows, but that's life, right?  That is one of the reasons why I enjoy this authors writing, she places her characters in realistic situations where things aren't always perfect but she gets them to where they are meant to be and I am always happy with the outcome.  Oh, about those jars we have been reading about?  The last one has been found and if you are curious about the importance of them in the three books then you should definitely read the series.  I think you'll like it.

I received a copy from the publisher and was under no obligation to write a review.  All opinions are my own.

***NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR***
As the Light Fades is published as a standalone novel, but features some characters from one of Catherine's earlier novels, The Things We Knew, published in 2016 by Thomas Nelson.

Paperback

Expected publication: September 10th 2019 by KDP

Buy a copy on Amazon

My thoughts:

I expect to be fully engrossed in any novel penned by Ms. West so I will just let you know, this one exceeded my expectations.  Yes, it really is that good and the author is a masterful storyteller!  Set in Nantucket, we reconnect with the Carlisle family, but let me perfectly clear, this is a standalone novel  so if you haven't had the opportunity to read the novel, The Things We Knew, I honestly don't think it will take away from your enjoyment of this book.

Ms. West tackles some pretty heavy topics in this heartrending story, important topics that may have touched our families or friends but they are so realistically written I felt like I was  involved in their lives and I wanted the best for them.  From Drake, the artistic patriarch who suffers from Alzheimer's  to the young troubled teen, Mia who has a lot to overcome in her life, there are just so many well defined and wonderful characters to love. Give me a story with strong family dynamics such as this one and I will be a very happy reader.
There some humorous parts that put a smile on my face making me love this book so very much.

Overall, As the Light Fades is a must read in my opinion which is why I highly recommend it.  The characters are ones that you won't soon forget and if you are like me, you'll hope there will another book with some of the same characters.

I received a copy through Netgalley.  All opinions are my own.

About the Author
Cari Lynn Webb lives in South Carolina with her husband, daughters and assorted four-legged family members. She's been blessed to see the power of true love in her grandparent's 70 year marriage and her parent's marriage of over 50 years. She knows love isn't always sweet and perfect, it can be challenging, complicated and risky. But she believes happily-ever-afters are worth fighting for. She loves to connect with readers. Visit her at her website.

My thoughts:

I have read a lot of books in the Harlequin Heartwarming line and while they have all been good, I have to say that this book is one of my favorites. I absolutely adored Brooke Ellis plus anytime an animal is written into a storyline, I'm completely enamored of any and all of the furry little creatures.

My heart just ached for Brooke as she suddenly finds herself homeless due to  wildfire but just as quickly my heart soared a tiny bit when the kind and gentle Rick Sawyer offers her (and her fur babies) a ride and a place to stay.
Of course the home that's offered to her belongs to Rick's son, Dan who is facing some challenges of his own.

I fell in love with Brooke, Dan and his young son, Ben. They were a pure joy to meet and I honestly felt like I was meeting them.  That is how realistic the author wrote her characters. There are plenty of secondary characters that I would like to get better acquainted with, too.  I hope that there will be more books in this series because I am ready to return to City By The Bay.  Although this isn't the first book in the series, it was fine to read as a stand-alone novel but I certainly do not want to miss out on any other book that may be part of the series.

Overall, this truly was a heartwarming read with a wonderful storyline that flowed at a perfect pace.  The characters are compelling and for those reasons, I highly recommend, Single Dad to the Rescue.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received through Prism Book Tours.  I was under no obligation to write a positive review.  All opinions are my own.
