Spent Identity
(Annalisse Series #2)
By Marlene M. Bell
Contemporary Romantic Suspense
Paperback & ebook, 378 Pages

December 11th 2019 by Ewephoric Publishing

To find her missing aunt, she has to unearth the secrets of the past. But lies and deceit run through the very heart of their town….

What started out as a promising relationship with adventurer and tycoon Alec Zavos has fizzled into an uncertain future for antiquities expert Annalisse Drury. Returning to Walker Farm in Upstate New York to see her Aunt Kate should have been a welcome homecoming and distraction. Instead, she finds the childhood home she expected to inherit is for sale, without her permission. What’s worse, Kate’s ranch manager makes a gruesome discovery in the barn: the body of a man, dead by foul play.

Annalisse turns in Alec’s direction for help. She and her aunt shelter on his estate in the Catskills while the authorities canvass the scene. But when Kate herself disappears without a trace, Annalisse fears the worst: that one of the many secrets of her hometown has ensnared her family—a secret someone is willing to kill for to keep hidden.

Praise for the Book

"The story is welcoming and vibrant, and much of it is nuanced and warm. When Bell aims for fun adventure, she hits the bull's-eye." - Booklife Review

"...Bell keeps her well-paced story moving. Her use of dialogue to drive the narrative is excellent and she sticks the twist ending nicely, one of the harder tricks to pull off in this genre. Her characters are vivid and spot-on..." - IndieReader Review

"Ambitiously written, Spent Identity has lots of action, a solid narrative, and engaging dialogue that give it substance, while the theme of betrayal cuts a wide swath. Enhanced with a cast of well-balanced and wide-ranging characters, Spent Identity acts as more than a run of the mill mystery, with engaging and relatable family relationships woven into the mains storyline. Suspenseful and well-crafted, Spent Identity is a consistently entertaining read." Self-Publishing Review

My thoughts;

I haven't read the first book in the series and found Secret Identity was fine as a standalone but some readers may want to start with the first book, Stolen Obsession.
Annalise Drury is an antiquities appraiser who has a troubled relationship with Alec Zavos so I assume the first book in the series has more about that.  What I can tell you for sure about this book is the wild ride I was taken on from the start.

Annalise intends to speak to her Aunt Kate about her relationship but when she arrives at the farm she discovers the farm she expects to inherit is for sale, there is a strange body found in the barn and if that's not enough to digest, Kate goes missing. Oh, and there's a lot more that happens in the story but I wont go into to detail because everyone needs an element of surprise when reading a page turner  I really liked getting to know the characters and the non-stop action.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel.  I liked the authors writing and will read more of her work so, I think that if your are already a fan of Ms. Bell's work you will definitely want to read this book and if she is a new to you author like she was to me, than you should pick up a copy. .

I received a copy of this book as part of a blog tour but was under no obligation to write a positive review.  All opinions are my own.

People die, but legends live on.

New York antiquities appraiser Annalisse Drury recently lost her best friend to murder. The killer’s identity may be linked to her friend’s expensive missing bracelet—a 500-year-old artifact that carries an ancient curse, one that unleashes evil upon any who dare wear the jewelry created for the Persian royal family.

Weeks later, Annalisse sees a matching necklace at a Manhattan gallery opening. She begs the owner to destroy the cursed piece, but her pleas fall on deaf ears—despite the unnatural death that occurs during the opening. With two victims linked to the jewelry, Annalisse is certain she must act.

Desperate, Annalisse enlists the gallery owner’s son to help—even though she’s afraid he’ll break her heart. Wealthy and devastatingly handsome, with a string of bereft women in his wake, Greek playboy Alec Zavos dismisses Annalisse’s concerns—until his parents are ripped from the Zavos family yacht during their ocean voyage near Crete.

Annalisse and Alec race across two oceans to save his mother, feared dead or kidnapped. When the killer changes tactics and goes after Alec behind Annalisse’s back, can her plan to rescue Alec’s mother save them all?

Hold on for a heart-thumping, thrilling adventure through exotic lands in this fast-moving romantic suspense mystery by Marlene M. Bell.

The Blizzard Bride (Daughters of the Mayflower #11) by Suzanne Dietze

Book Description

A Blizzard Changes Everything

Abigail Bracey arrives in Nebraska in January 1888 to teach school…and to execute a task for the government: to identify a student as the hidden son of a murderous counterfeiter—the man who killed her father.

Agent Dashiell Lassiter doesn’t want his childhood sweetheart Abby on this dangerous job, especially when he learns the counterfeiter is now searching for his son, too, and he’ll destroy anyone in his way. Now Dash must follow Abby to Nebraska to protect her…if she’ll let him within two feet of her. She’s still angry he didn’t fight to marry her six years ago, and he never told her the real reason he left her.

All Dash wants is to protect Abby, but when a horrifying blizzard sweeps over them, can Abby and Dash set aside the pain from their pasts and work together to catch a counterfeiter and protect his son—if they survive the storm?

My thoughts:

The Daughters of the Mayflower has been one of my favorite series, each book penned by different authors is fantastic.  I have found some authors that were new to me but are now among my favorites.
In the Blizzard Bride we meet school teacher, Abigail Bracey who travels to Nebraska when she is tasked to help find the young son of a dangerous man who had killed her father.
Dash is assigned to the case which is all good and well, except he and Abigail have a past history and when she balks at working with him, I thought that would be the end of that, but boy was I wrong.

As the new school teacher she is contractually obligated to be unattached romantically but when Dash shows up at her school to deliver a message to her, the townspeople read more into the relationship than there is, much to Abagail's chagrin.   The storyline isn't just all cuteness and flirtations, no it's much more than that with a killer on the lose, the child who he is searching for and the Blizzard of 1888.  One of the reasons I'm a huge fan of historical fiction are the real situations woven into the storyline such as this one.
There are some sweet, touching scenes throughout the book and I loved the small town, the family who Abigail boarded with during her term and the children she taught.

Overall, I thought this was a well researched, compelling novel with a storyline that flowed at a good  place.  The characters seemed so real that I could easily imagine them walking down the street greeting each other  and I could picture the pet skunk who was not welcome in Abigail's schoolroom.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley.  All opinions are my own.

End Game (Capital Intrique Book 1) by Rachel Dylan

About the book

When elite members of the military are murdered on the streets of Washington, DC, FBI Special Agent Bailey Ryan and NCIS Special Agent Marco Agostini must work together to bring the perpetrator to justice. Unfortunately, all evidence points to a Navy SEAL sniper whom Bailey refuses to believe is guilty.

When Bailey and Marco start to connect the dots between the victims, including a link to a powerful defense contractor, they wonder if there's a deeper cover-up at play. Then Bailey is targeted, and it becomes clear that someone is willing to kill to keep their dark secrets.
With the stakes getting higher by the moment in a twisted conspiracy, there's a rush against the clock to determine whom they can really trust. As allies turn to enemies, the biggest secret yet to be uncovered could be the end of all of them.

My thoughts:

If you like books filled with suspense and a storyline that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat, I think that you will love this novel as much as I did.  There is non-stop action throughout the pages of End Game.

There is a lot going on in this book that had me turning pages as quickly as I could because I wanted to find out what was happening and why.  The agencies involved, how they work together and how close knit the community is, was an extremely interesting read.  This is an incredible start to the new series by Ms. Dylan and I am super excited to see what she has in store for her readers in the remaining books in the series.

I thought this riveting story with fantastic characters is one of Ms. Dylan's best novels which is why I highly recommend it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book.  All opinions are my own.

The Thief of Lanwyn Manor (Cornwall #2) by Sarah E. Ladd

Book Description

Cornwall, England, 1818

Julia Twethewey needs a diversion to mend her broken heart, so when her cousin invites her to Lanwyn Manor, Julia eagerly accepts. The manor is located at the heart of Cornwall’s mining industry, and as a guest Julia is swept into its intricate world. It’s not long, though, before she realizes something dark lurks within the home’s ancient halls.

As a respected mine owner’s younger son, Isaac Blake is determined to keep his late father’s legacy alive through the family business, despite his brother’s careless attitude. In order to save their livelihood—and that of the people around them—the brothers approach the master of Lanwyn Manor with plans to bolster the floundering local industry. Isaac can’t deny his attraction to the man’s charming niece, but his brother has made clear his intentions to court the lovely visitor. And Isaac knows his place.

When tragedy strikes, mysteries arise, and valuables go missing, Julia and Isaac find they are pulled together in a swirl of strange circumstances, but despite their best efforts to bow to social expectations, their hearts aren’t so keen to surrender.

Sweet Regency Romance
Full-length novel, approximately 90,000 words
Second in the Cornwall series, but can be read alone
Perfect for fans of Poldark, Sarah Ladd’s latest Regency romance, The Thief of Lanwyn Manor, explores Cornwall, England, and the secrets within one of its historic manor houses.

My thoughts:

The Thief of Lanwyn Manor is another wonderful novel penned by Ms. Ladd and the second book in her Cornwall series.  I know when I pick up a book by this author that I will be transported to the setting she chooses to write about and I know that I'll captivated from the very beginning.  This book does not disappoint.

I  loved the characters and the storyline held my attention throughout.  I haven't read too much about copper mines so that was interesting to me. There's some twists and turns mixed in which always causes me to keep reading until my eyes are practically screaming for eye drops, so I use the drops and keep on reading.  I just couldn't put this book down but that happens to me when I am reading a captivating novel like this one.
Although this is the second book in the series, it can be read as a standalone but I suggest you read the first book, The Governess of Penwythe Hall because it is such a good read.

I received a complimentary copy from the publisher though Netgalley.  All opinions expressed are completely my own.

Rosanna's Gift by Susan Lantz Simpson

Book Description

In Southern Maryland's serene Amish country, one young woman's life is changed by an unexpected request . . .

"She's yours." Until now, Rosanna Mast's hopes for the future have all revolved around handsome Henry Zook. But when a young Englisch girl places her newborn daughter in Rosanna's arms and utters those words, shock quickly turns to fierce, protective devotion. Between helping her midwife mamm and caring for her own siblings, Rosanna has plenty of experience with babies. And who wouldn't love a sweet-natured boppli like little Mollie? Yet to her dismay, Henry has no intention of ever taking on another man's child. Instead, it is steady, thoughtful Paul Hertzler who becomes Rosanna's staunch supporter.

Paul knows he should have acted sooner on his feelings for Rosanna. Now, as her dream of adopting Mollie meets unexpected hurdles, he sees a way to help. Rosanna would do anything to keep baby Mollie--perhaps even agree to marriage. But will Rosanna continue to hold him at arm's length, or see that he longs to offer her the love and family she deserves?

My thoughts:

I have read several books penned by Ms. Simpson and have to say I enjoy her writing so much.  I live near and shop in the community she writes about in her books so that's another reason I have been drawn to her novels.
Rosanna's Gift is my favorite novel penned by Ms. Simpson because the storyline was intriguing from the very beginning. I know that young women who cant' keep their babies put them up for adoption but I was totally unprepared for a mother to give her baby to a young Amish woman. especially since the young Amish woman was just as shocked as I was.  Rosanna was chosen by the unwed mother to care for and raise her child which was heartwarming after it was revealed why the mother chose her.

Rosanna's family was supportive by offering to help her in any way they could and she is going to need a lot of emotional support when the baby's aunt decides she wants to be involved in her nieces life. .Paul is one of my favorite characters, he's a person outside of the family who proves he'll be there for Rosanna and Mollie no matter what.  I loved his devotion to them and how he stood by Rosanna no matter what she was facing.

I was fully engaged from the first page to the last page in this well written and interesting novel.  I look forward to reading more from Susan Lantz Simpson. For fans of sweet, clean and Amish fiction  this book would be a perfect read and is suitable for readers of all ages.
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this novel.  All opinions are my own.

Foreve Hidden ( The Treasures of Nome 1) by Tracie Peterson and Kimberly Woodhouse

Book Description

For Havyn Powell, growing up on her grandfather Chuck Bondrant's dairy outside the 1904 gold-rush boomtown of Nome, Alaska, offered all she needed. She had the love of her mother, two sisters, and grandfather. But now, at 23, Havyn realizes the stability of her life may soon vanish. Havyn is determined to find a way to keep the family together, but her grandfather's health is declining and everyone seems to be holding secrets from each other, including the handsome, dark-haired stranger who recently arrived.

John Roselli arrives in Nome looking for a steady, consistent job. He has grown tired of the promises of getting rich quick and just wants an honest job with honest pay. His grandfather once knew a Chuck Bondrant, and so when John arrives at the dairy, he's quickly offered a job--and a path to more if he wants it.

Havyn's plan for helping out the family means using her beautiful singing voice and her sisters' musical talent at a local roadhouse. They're an immediate hit, and it looks like her plan will be a success. But the spotlight brings with it dangerous eyes that covet Havyn and are jealous as she and John grow ever closer. But will they realize the peril before it's too late?

My thoughts:

I loved meeting the Powell family in Forever Hidden.  Three musically gifted sisters, their equally gifted mother and the grandfather who loves his family more than anyone or anything else. I adore a storyline with strong family dynamics and Ms. Peterson and Ms. Woodhouse certainly brought the love of family to life within the pages of their latest novel.

In 1904 in Nome, Alaska readers get to know this family and the secrets they keep and on my goodness do they have a lot of secrets but they also have a deep love for each other as they face the daily work of farming and illnesses but through it all their love of music and for each other helps them get the through the hard times.   I loved the distinct personalities of the three sister, they can be feisty, sweet natured but no matter what they are feeling family always comes first. They have their disagreements, especially when their grandfather hires John as a foreman on the farm.  Not exactly a popular decision shared by everyone but he was the perfect addition to the storyline  I absolutely adored him, he's kind, a hard worker and an all around good guy.
I loved everything about this book, from the engaging character to the amazing storyline.

Overall, I thought this book was well written, thoroughly researched and the story flowed perfectly.  I am a huge fan of both authors and this novel, so it's going to be difficult to wait for the next book in the series.  I think this book is a must read.

I received a complimentary copy from the publisher.  I was under no obligation to write a review all opinions are completely my own. .

A Promise to Keep by Melony Teague

Book Description

Research librarian Savannah Sanderson wants nothing more than to escape into her happily-ever-after novels with their larger-than-life fictional heroes. But a promise to her late husband has her attending her dreaded twenty-year high school reunion, drinking ghastly punch, and taking desperate measures just to keep her vow, even if she has to hide behind the décor to do it.
Once a reckless troublemaker, Michael McCann fled town after graduation. Now a professional technical rescuer, he’s back for the reunion, but on his trip down memory lane, he soon comes face to face with unresolved issues, namely Savannah.

Before the night is over, a pact between these two old friends will lead them on an adventure into uncharted emotional territory where Michael must confront his past regrets and find the courage to reveal the truth. But can Savannah fly from her sheltered nest and risk her heart on a real-life hero?

My thoughts:

A Promise to Keep is a fantastic and impressive debut novel.  In the heart-stirring story of Savannah Sanders and Michael McCann who reconnect at their high school reunion., the author crafted characters who I genuinely loved.  Savannah will break your heart as the widowed young woman who is only attending her 20th high school reunion to keep a promise she made to her dying husband. Savannah doesn't really want to be there, but a promise is a promise, right?
Luckily Michael is looking for an escape route, too but it involves his dear friend Savannah. This is where the laugh out loud moments begin.  Michael is funny, kind, sweet and quite adventurous as Savannah soon discovers when they begin to spend time together.

It was great fun traveling with the characters but this book isn't all fun and games, it's an emotional read blended perfectly with action and a little drama.  Ms. Teague penned a beautiful and heartfelt  story with within the pages of this book.  The emotions are real and powerful and the characters are ones that I will think of occasionally because they seemed so real to me.  I look forward to more of this authors work and highly recommend this book.
I received a copy from the publisher.  All opinions are completely my own.

Praise for The Marriage of Miss Jane Austen

Hemingway again displays his notable ability to recreate time and place, moving on from the heady days of Jane Austen's early love to a marriage beset by difficulties and a country at war. Hemingway ... vividly and authentically portrays the times. ... [T]his is a lively, compelling read, [a] sobering but moving finale to Hemingway's successful trilogy. —BlueInk Review

Immensely satisfying ... Marriage is lively, compelling, and fun. ... [Her] relationship with her husband Ashton still sparkles. Marriage is a lovely ode to their connection. ... Hemingway has combined Austen's humanity with her fiction and created a Jane that lives and breathes on the page. Audiences will want her to be real... It offers a wonderful, imagined alternate life for the well-loved author. —Claire Foster, Foreword Review

‘Enjoyable … an imaginative, well-researched series.’ —Kirkus Reviews

My thoughts:

This is the third book in the series and since I haven't  read the first two, it didn't deter me from enjoying this imaginative account of Jane and Ashton's marriage.  We know that Jane did not marry but it was a interesting to read how her life may have been with a husband and sick child to contend with.

The writing was descriptive, the storyline was interesting and compelled me to imagine a marriage of Jane Austen.  Honestly, I often imagine the characters, the time period and the experiences in much of what I read.   After awhile, I could believe that most of what I was reading could be true which is sure sign, Mr. Hemingway is an incredible author.

The Little Book Bookshop on the Seine by Rebecca Raisin

Book Description

Bookshop owner Sarah Smith has been offered the opportunity to exchange bookshops with her new Parisian friend for 6 months! And saying yes is a no-brainer – after all, what kind of a romantic would turn down a trip to Paris? Even if it does mean leaving the irresistible Ridge Warner behind, Sarah’s sure she’s in for the holiday of a lifetime – complete with all the books she can read!

Picturing days wandering around Shakespeare & Co, munching on croissants, sipping café au laits and people-watching on the Champs-Elysees Sarah boards the plane. But will her dream of a Parisian Happily-Ever-After come true? Or will Sarah realise that the dream isn’t quite as rosy in reality…

My thoughts:

I had heard so much about this book so when I had an opportunity to read it, I decided it would be a fun read, which it was.  I liked the premise even if it seemed a bit far-fetched to me but it turned out to be a rather interesting and a pleasant light read.

I liked Sara and the passion she has for books but boy is she in for a surprise when she meets the staff she manages in the Paris book shop.  I had to sympathize with her at first but after awhile it got on my nerves to  see her try so hard and not gain any respect for the first few chapters.
As the story progressed, I did become more interested and started to enjoy her adventures and the relationships she had with her new friends.

Overall, this was an enjoyable  book to read with a few likable characters and wonderful descriptions of Paris.
I received an e-copy from the publisher and have given my honest opinion.

On The Wings of Devotion by Roseanna M. White Book Review

Book Description
Against Every Warning, She’s Drawn Ever Closer to the Man Known as “Black Heart”

All of England thinks Major Phillip Camden a monster–a man who deliberately caused the deaths of his squadron. But he would have preferred to die that day with his men rather than be recruited to the Admiralty’s codebreaking division. The threats he receives daily are no great surprise and, in his opinion, well deserved.

As nurse Arabelle Denler observes the so-dubbed “Black Heart,” she sees something far different: a hurting man desperate for mercy. And when their families and paths twist together unexpectedly, she realizes she has a role to play in his healing–and some of her own to do as well.

With Camden’s court-martial looming, an old acquaintance shows up, intent on using him in a plot that sends the codebreakers of Room 40 into a frenzy. With their fragile hopes for the future in the cross hairs, Arabelle and Camden must hold on to hope–and to each other–if they want to survive.

Series: The Codebreakers (Book 2)
Paperback: 390 pages
Publisher: Bethany House Publishers (January 7, 2020)

My thoughts:

On Wings of Devotion is such a compelling book that it was hard for me to stop reading it once I started.  I had waited for this book since finishing the first book, The Number of Love so I knew this would be good but I didn't realize just how good it would be and that I would so caught up in the storyline from the very first page.

Arabelle Denler is an amazing character, she's strong, caring, forgiving and the perfect woman for Phillip Camden who is called Black Heart.  I loved them separately and I loved them together.  Quite honestly I didn't love him immediately because I had viewed him negatively in the first book but Ms. White made me love and root for him to live his best life in this artfully crafted novel.
There is one scene in the book where I was completely surprised but extremely proud of the spunk Arabelle showed to a certain young man that had me laughing as  I read it.

I loved everything about this beautifully crafted story that flows at a perfect pace. with a bit of danger, a lot of suspense and truly wonderful characters.  My only complaint is having to wait for the next book in the series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher.  All opinions are my own.
