Book Description
Ten years after her parents were killed, Evelyn Radcliffe is once more homeless. The orphanage that was her refuge and later her workplace has burned to the ground, and only she and a young orphan girl have escaped. Convinced this must be related to her parents' murders, Evelyn flees with the girl to Mesquite Springs in the Texas Hill Country and finds refuge in the home of Wyatt Clark, a talented horse rancher whose plans don't include a family of his own.
At first, Evelyn is a distraction. But when it becomes clear that trouble has followed her to Mesquite Springs, she becomes a full-blown disruption. Can Wyatt keep her safe from the man who wants her dead? And will his own plans become collateral damage?
Suspenseful and sweetly romantic, Out of the Embers is the first in a new series that invites you to the Texas Hill Country in the 1850s, when the West was wild, the men were noble, and the women were strong.
My thoughts:
The first book by Ms. Cabot in her new Mesquite Springs series is everything I hoped for and more. I am a huge fan of the authors writing so I knew it would be good but this was my favorite novel of hers so far.
With wonderful characters and an engaging storyline I had a hard time putting this book down. I adored Evelyn and Polly from the moment I met them and once their story unfolded it was heartbreaking to think of the situations that led them to the orphanage and the one that forced them to leave. Fortunately they crossed paths with Wyatt Clark who offered them a place stay on his family's ranch. I loved watching Evelyn grow more confident with help from Wyatt, his mother and his sister, Dorothy. It was the kindness the she needed to make a home for herself and Polly.
Not only is this a sweet romance but there is a little suspense and mystery blended in to make this a truly enjoyable and wonderful novel. If you like a well written, perfectly paced novel than you'll love Out of the Embers.
I received a copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
